BOTANY WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 7PM, Wed, April 6th, 2011 Asbury Hall at Groce United Methodist Church (Asbury Hall is at the end opposite the main sanctuary) 954 Tunnel Road
BWHA strives to enhance our neighborhood. In addition to representing residents when communicating with agencies such as NCDOT, BWHA has organized neighborhood yard sales, waste container cleanups, neighborhood picnics, sign construction projects, coordinated clearing of brush to improve visibility and safety for traffic, provided for additional snow plowing, helped increase security via neighborhood Watch and generally promoted community spirit by helping neighbors to get to know each other. All of this takes time, effort and money. While we have a fairly healthy balance of about $1600, your support and participation will assist BWHA to further its efforts to help build an even better community. Please join us in continuing to strengthen our sense of neighborhood community and letting our voice be heard when important decisions (such as annexation by the City of Asheville) must be made. Attend the general meeting and help usher in a new generation of leadership.

Neighbor Profile by Linda Brown Chris and Paula Hennon are meteorologists who came to Asheville from Miami, FL six years ago. They met as graduate students at Ohio State University, where they both graduated with Ph.D.s in Atmospheric Science. Paula grew up in Chagrin Falls, OH and attended college at Fordham University in New York City. Chris also was raised in the Cleveland OH area and attended Miami University in Oxford OH. Their daughter, Olivia, was born at Ohio State in 2003 just days after Chris graduated. The family moved to Miami five months later so Chris could pursue a position as a visiting scientist at the National Hurricane Center. After nearly two years of close calls with hurricanes (they moved just before Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma hit Florida), Chris was hired at UNC Asheville in 2005 to teach meteorology. Paula began working at the National Climatic Data Center in downtown Asheville as a tropical meteorologist in 2010. Olivia is now in the second grade at Evergreen Community Charter School. She loves school and riding horses. The Hennons are active sailboat racers, taking their Jet-14 sloop around the east coast to regattas. Chris also plays golf and racquetball in his free time. The family loves living in Botany Woods and plans to stay for a long time.

Neighbor Profile: “Hello Neighbors of Botany Woods” By Wendy Grimwood This greeting is from Charles “Doc” Bunner. Perhaps you’ve seen him walking with his friendly big yellow Lab., “Daisy”. As a younger man, Charles enlisted in the Navy and became a Navy Hospital Corpsman through the Great Lakes Naval Station. He served in Viet Nam with the 1st Marine Division in Medical personnel. Charles explained that the reason he was given the nickname "Doc” is “all Navy Corpsmen/Corpswaves are honored by the Marines by being called "Doc", a name all who served with the Marines hold dearly, for as we would risk our lives to get to them [the wounded] to save them, they would do anything for us”. Charles and his wife Mary, a Cataloger at the Buncombe County “Pack” Library, lived in Ohio when they first met after Charles got out of the Navy. They moved to Lexington, Kentucky to attend college, where Mary earned her MA in Library Scineces and Charles, his BA. They then moved to Bay Pines VA in St. Petersburg, Florida before transferring here to the Asheville VAMC and finally calling Botany Woods their home. They moved into their home on Botany View Court on the first of May, 1991. Charles and Mary have two sons, Charlie and Nicholas. Charlie has his own place on the West side of town and Nicholas is still at home. They “really like the quiet and community feeling here in Botany Woods” and enjoy how pretty it is when the Dogwoods and other trees and flowers are blooming in the spring. They both grew up feeling the willingness of family and friends to help each other through their lives, and hope to continue to do the same here. Charles is enjoying retirement and likes to garden, play chess, bowl, read westerns and mysteries, and play card games. He especially likes to walk in the neighborhood with Daisy and asks us if we see him and/or Mary walking their dog, to please stop them to chat. He is glad to live in Botany Woods. We are grateful to Charles for his participation on the BWHA Board, and especially for his taking the initiative in the clearing of brush to improve the view of traffic at Lower Grassy Branch and Botany Drive.
