A Neighbor Profile by Wendy Grimwood

This summer Rob and Jean Quayle will celebrate 50 years of marriage.
“When we embarked on this little adventure”, ’Jeannie’ and Rob were
married when she was 17 and he barely 18. They have two daughters,
two granddaughters, and one great grandson.

Rob was in the US Naval Reserve 1960-1964, during which time he
graduated from Florida State Univ. majoring in meteorology (with
minors in math & physics). As a meteorologist, in 1965 Rob
went to work for the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville.
He and Jeannie bought their first home in Asheville at that time.

Among the many assignments Rob had, one of the most interesting
was the NASA work at Cape Canaveral analyzing data from a 500 ft
weather tower at Kennedy Space Center in support of the Apollo Program.
“The view of Cape Canaveral is pretty impressive from the top of that tower,
which is still operating.” Also a favorite was working for the Commission
on Marine Meteorology with the World Meteorological Organization, with
postings in Geneva, Switzerland and Tokyo, Japan. Rob retired in 2000,
the same year he became chairman of the Botany Woods Homeowners Association.

Rob’s hobbies include maintaining the yard, reading science & history,
puttering in the shop, goofing off with friends, & BWHA (until I retire from that too).
Jean's main hobby is cooking. She started as a legal secretary in 1966 and retired
as Corporate Secretary for the Slosman Corp. (now Blue Ridge Converting) in 2002.

Rob and Jean, together, held a one third share in a real estate development company
that existed from 1977 to 2003. Rob also volunteered continuously with United Way for 41
years. Rob and Jean Quayle have lived in Botany Woods since September, 1997.

We are grateful for the time and energy Rob has dedicated to BWHA over the past
12 years and the vision he has held for a growing sense of community.
