Note from the Prez: Beavers, Bears & Garbage

Beavers have been busy in the river this year and bears have been busy scattering our garbage around the neighborhood. If you can delay putting your trash out until 8:30AM or so on Wednesdays, maybe the Waste Pro truck will beat the bears to the garbage. We all want to keep the neighborhood looking as spiffy as we can. Prompt clean-up of spilled trash is appreciated.

A Neighbor Profile by Wendy Grimwood

Jane Tara Cicchetti moved to Botany Woods six years ago, from Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, where she founded and directed a school for homeopathy for about eight years. Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine that uses very small doses of natural substances to stimulate the body and mind to heal naturally. Jane has devoted a large part of her life, more than 25 years to date, to this practice that was founded almost 200 years ago in Germany. She studied with Francisco Eizayaga, M.D., and George Vithoulkas, a famous homeopath. Today Homeopathy is much more widely used in Europe than in the United States, though I know many, including myself, who have been successfully using remedies for a long time. Jane often travels to Europe to teach advanced courses on this subject, particularly on the use
of dream analysis to help homeopaths find the correct remedy for an individual. Her book, entitled “Dreams, Symbols and Homeopathy” has also been translated into German. Jane is currently working on a second book in the same genre and practices homeopathy in downtown Asheville.

Jane enjoys living in Botany Woods, is the current Coordinator of Neighborhood Watch and serves as a liaison between Botany Woods and the sheriff’s office in time of need. She keeps an email list of participants and sends notices about neighborhood security from time to time. Jane is interested in co-creating outreach in the community, and if you’d like to join the Neighborhood Watch email list or have questions about the role of Neighborhood Watch, please contact her at [janetara@mac.com]

A Neighbor Profile by Wendy Grimwood

This summer Rob and Jean Quayle will celebrate 50 years of marriage.
“When we embarked on this little adventure”, ’Jeannie’ and Rob were
married when she was 17 and he barely 18. They have two daughters,
two granddaughters, and one great grandson.

Rob was in the US Naval Reserve 1960-1964, during which time he
graduated from Florida State Univ. majoring in meteorology (with
minors in math & physics). As a meteorologist, in 1965 Rob
went to work for the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville.
He and Jeannie bought their first home in Asheville at that time.

Among the many assignments Rob had, one of the most interesting
was the NASA work at Cape Canaveral analyzing data from a 500 ft
weather tower at Kennedy Space Center in support of the Apollo Program.
“The view of Cape Canaveral is pretty impressive from the top of that tower,
which is still operating.” Also a favorite was working for the Commission
on Marine Meteorology with the World Meteorological Organization, with
postings in Geneva, Switzerland and Tokyo, Japan. Rob retired in 2000,
the same year he became chairman of the Botany Woods Homeowners Association.

Rob’s hobbies include maintaining the yard, reading science & history,
puttering in the shop, goofing off with friends, & BWHA (until I retire from that too).
Jean's main hobby is cooking. She started as a legal secretary in 1966 and retired
as Corporate Secretary for the Slosman Corp. (now Blue Ridge Converting) in 2002.

Rob and Jean, together, held a one third share in a real estate development company
that existed from 1977 to 2003. Rob also volunteered continuously with United Way for 41
years. Rob and Jean Quayle have lived in Botany Woods since September, 1997.

We are grateful for the time and energy Rob has dedicated to BWHA over the past
12 years and the vision he has held for a growing sense of community.

Annual Meeting 2011

Minutes: The 16th annual BWHA General Meeting was held April 6, 2011, 7:05 – 8:20PM, at Groce UMC, Asbury Hall with 23 Botany Woods residents attending.

1. The minutes of the 2010 annual meeting were reviewed and the Treasurer’s report approved. The current balance was $1,951.65 with 45 members & $170 in expenses. Seven memberships ($70) were collected at the meeting. For CY 2010, expenses were $407.44 (biggest was the dumpster at $338.65), receipts were $250 and the closing balance was $1,611.65. The largest expense so far in 2011 was snow removal ($160), which was much appreciated by some in attendance.
2. Trash removal & recycling were discussed. After the meeting, several resources were emailed to BW residents.
3. A special BW general meeting, perhaps jointly with Eastmoor, on the topic of emergency preparedness was suggested, Jerry VeHaun as presenter. Rick Johnston outlined a number of topics. The fact that the BW & Eastmoor are both served by a single entrance with no other exit was pointed out. Vicki Garlock, at #1 Botany, suggested that when transportation or utilities are interrupted, a team of helpers (including her family) could render services to residents in need. The Garlocks can also relay snow reports for the hill at the entrance, which BWHA can transmit via email. A meeting like this & a catalog of special needs providers and recipients will be considered by the board. (After the meeting Rob Quayle emailed Eastmoor HOA about this. Eastmoor expressed no interest in this idea.)
5. A yard sale, perhaps at the same time as the one in Eastmoor) will be planned. (After the meeting Rob Quayle emailed Eastmoor HOA about this. Eastmoor will not have a yard sale this year.)
6. A dumpster will be scheduled for 2011. It will be at Botany View Ct.
7. New board members Shirley Heim, Kris Moore, & Rob Quayle were elected. In addition, Dwayne Tate (present) & Mickey Gamble (absent) are interested in serving and will be participating in the future. Some of us old, long-serving officers would like to retire.
8. A picnic was deemed a good idea. The Garlocks may offer a drop-in. (After the meeting, the Colvins suggested Aug 21 or 28 as possible dates at their house & huge deck.) The board will consider this.
7. Several residents expressed concern about the problem of poor visibility (caused by artificial berms and vegetation) at the busy intersection of Botany Dr, Lower Grassy Branch Rd, & Old Farm School Rd. Several of us (BWHA included are formally on record as having reported this to NCDOT. One novel solution proposed was a 4-way stop. Another was contacting elected government representatives. (After the meeting, contact options were emailed in BW.)
8. The power outages caused by our backline utility services located in dense forest areas were discussed. Some long-time residents (e.g., Linda Preston) said service has improved in recent years. The board will consider what kind of special communication with Progress Energy (Duke Power) might be beneficial. The needs of the power company & the residents more or less coincide: We don’t like service interruptions & they don’t like costly repairs.
9. Doc Bunner has indexed & scanned all old Botany Bulletins into PDFs. We are slowly uploading them to the BWHA blog, & will give a CD of them to anyone who requests it.
Meeting adjourned about 8:20PM.

BOTANY WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 7PM, Wed, April 6th, 2011 Asbury Hall at Groce United Methodist Church (Asbury Hall is at the end opposite the main sanctuary) 954 Tunnel Road

BWHA strives to enhance our neighborhood. In addition to representing residents when communicating with agencies such as NCDOT, BWHA has organized neighborhood yard sales, waste container cleanups, neighborhood picnics, sign construction projects, coordinated clearing of brush to improve visibility and safety for traffic, provided for additional snow plowing, helped increase security via neighborhood Watch and generally promoted community spirit by helping neighbors to get to know each other. All of this takes time, effort and money. While we have a fairly healthy balance of about $1600, your support and participation will assist BWHA to further its efforts to help build an even better community. Please join us in continuing to strengthen our sense of neighborhood community and letting our voice be heard when important decisions (such as annexation by the City of Asheville) must be made. Attend the general meeting and help usher in a new generation of leadership.

Neighbor Profile by Linda Brown Chris and Paula Hennon are meteorologists who came to Asheville from Miami, FL six years ago. They met as graduate students at Ohio State University, where they both graduated with Ph.D.s in Atmospheric Science. Paula grew up in Chagrin Falls, OH and attended college at Fordham University in New York City. Chris also was raised in the Cleveland OH area and attended Miami University in Oxford OH. Their daughter, Olivia, was born at Ohio State in 2003 just days after Chris graduated. The family moved to Miami five months later so Chris could pursue a position as a visiting scientist at the National Hurricane Center. After nearly two years of close calls with hurricanes (they moved just before Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma hit Florida), Chris was hired at UNC Asheville in 2005 to teach meteorology. Paula began working at the National Climatic Data Center in downtown Asheville as a tropical meteorologist in 2010. Olivia is now in the second grade at Evergreen Community Charter School. She loves school and riding horses. The Hennons are active sailboat racers, taking their Jet-14 sloop around the east coast to regattas. Chris also plays golf and racquetball in his free time. The family loves living in Botany Woods and plans to stay for a long time.

Neighbor Profile: “Hello Neighbors of Botany Woods” By Wendy Grimwood This greeting is from Charles “Doc” Bunner. Perhaps you’ve seen him walking with his friendly big yellow Lab., “Daisy”. As a younger man, Charles enlisted in the Navy and became a Navy Hospital Corpsman through the Great Lakes Naval Station. He served in Viet Nam with the 1st Marine Division in Medical personnel. Charles explained that the reason he was given the nickname "Doc” is “all Navy Corpsmen/Corpswaves are honored by the Marines by being called "Doc", a name all who served with the Marines hold dearly, for as we would risk our lives to get to them [the wounded] to save them, they would do anything for us”. Charles and his wife Mary, a Cataloger at the Buncombe County “Pack” Library, lived in Ohio when they first met after Charles got out of the Navy. They moved to Lexington, Kentucky to attend college, where Mary earned her MA in Library Scineces and Charles, his BA. They then moved to Bay Pines VA in St. Petersburg, Florida before transferring here to the Asheville VAMC and finally calling Botany Woods their home. They moved into their home on Botany View Court on the first of May, 1991. Charles and Mary have two sons, Charlie and Nicholas. Charlie has his own place on the West side of town and Nicholas is still at home. They “really like the quiet and community feeling here in Botany Woods” and enjoy how pretty it is when the Dogwoods and other trees and flowers are blooming in the spring. They both grew up feeling the willingness of family and friends to help each other through their lives, and hope to continue to do the same here. Charles is enjoying retirement and likes to garden, play chess, bowl, read westerns and mysteries, and play card games. He especially likes to walk in the neighborhood with Daisy and asks us if we see him and/or Mary walking their dog, to please stop them to chat. He is glad to live in Botany Woods. We are grateful to Charles for his participation on the BWHA Board, and especially for his taking the initiative in the clearing of brush to improve the view of traffic at Lower Grassy Branch and Botany Drive.

Snow Removal

Recently (Jan 12th 2011 was the first time), BWHA hired Joshua Clark (216-5905) & two teen helpers to clear ice and snow off the steeper roads in Botany Woods. He also will do driveways on an individual basis, so feel free to call him. So far we have had favorable reports from residents who noticed that the work was done. He lives off Lower Grassy Branch Rd a little north of Botany Woods, on Wolf Rd.

**

Thank You

Board member Charles Bunner went out with heavy duty equipment in hand & cleaned up the visibility problem at the Botany Dr - Lower Grassy intersection (looking toward Tunnel Rd). We all thank him for this. He also picked up some trash and moved several dead trees that fell from the area. From now on, it should be easier just to go with the weed eater every now and then to keep it down.

Also, it was resident Mickey Gamble of Riverbend who told us about Joshua Clark (216-5905)for snow removal. Joshua used to live on Riverbend.

Swannanoa River Pollution: Worst seems downstream from us

This winter we had a great group of volunteers that braved the cold to take water samples from the Swannanoa River and its many tributaries. They took about 40 samples from Black Mountain to the French Broad River. We took those samples back to our office and incubated them to see if there was any e-coli contamination. Fifteen of the sites that were sampled registered some e-coli and two registered significant levels of e-coli pollution. Those two sites were the stream that flows from behind Lowes on Swannanoa River Road and the tributary that flows down by Highland Brewery and into the Swannanoa at the municipal golf course on Swannanoa River Road. More sampling dates planned for Jan. 13 and 20. We will let you know when we hear the results.

BWHA has done a great deal for our neighborhood. In addition to representing residents when communicating with agencies such as NCDOT, BWHA has held numerous yard sales, waste container cleanups, picnics, sign construction projects and generally given our community increased security via Neighborhood Watch and promotion of community spirit by helping neighbors to get to know each other. But all this takes time & work & money. While we have a fairly healthy balance of about $1,850 now, this will not last more than a year or two. Dumpsters, sign maintenance, printing, etc. take their toll. And someone is needed to lead and coordinate all this work.

Participation in the leadership of BWHA has not been strong in recent years. Basically, two board members, assisted by a small cadre of Glen Leaders for delivering Bulletins, have done most of the organizational & clerical work. This cannot be sustained. Either we recruit new leadership, or BWHA will ultimately become no more than an email list for neighborhood communication, if even that.

Please join us in keeping our sense of neighborhood together and letting our voice be heard when important decisions (such as annexation by the City of Asheville) must be made. Please attend the general meeting and help usher in a new generation of leadership for our community.

Bear-proofing ideas

With Waste Pro’s recent shift to Wednesday trash pickup after 9AM, it will be easier for some folks to avoid putting trash out the night before pickup. But even that is not a guarantee against bears getting into the trash (and some big bears have been seen in 2010). So here are some other ideas:

BEARICUDA has a 30 gal can for $65 plus shipping.
One neighbor reports success with this can keeping bears out.
Other neighbors use heavy duty cans, with extra-strong bungees and straps.

Break-in Deterrence,
by Charles Bunner:

On Nov. 20th, the home at 63 Botany Drive was broken into via the back door. The Renter asked me if I saw anything since I was just coming up the hill from Driftwood. I was sorry to say no that I hadn't. He then told me as the Deputy Sherriff drove into his driveway that they took everything. I don't know what he meant by everything. He told me before leaving that they had broken in via the back door which cannot be seen from the road. There are hedges in between his house and his neighbor at 61 Botany Drive. This prevented his neighbors from seeing anything.
For security purposes, I have learned over the years to make friends with your neighbors. Also to prevent break-ins some of the things I have learned include:
1. Keep all shrub cut down so that your home can be visible by your neighbors.
2. Reinforce any doors that can be broken into.
3. On sliding doors use a broom handle besides locking to prevent the lock from being picked.

If someone wants to break in they will often break in via a window or a glass door by breaking the glass. We need to be more vigilant and sociable with our neighbors and talk with them. Alert them if you are going to be out of town for a few days and ask them to keep a closer eye on your home.
As I have waked Daisy since this break in, I have been telling the people I see about this recent break in.

HI AND BYE!
(A neighbor profile)

Fifteen years ago Buffy and Steve White bought their house at 9 Botany View Court, after selling their organic produce farm in the Riceville Valley and joining South America Mission, an interdenominational faith mission. Career missionaries, they now serve four year terms abroad, and return home for one year furloughs to visit donor churches and raise support for the next term. Now, after their most recent one year furlough, they are returning to the Ammi Indian Bible Institute in West Central Brazil on June 1st. Their two children were raised in the mission field. Son Sam graduated last May from Bryan College and daughter Sarah is a senior
at Dartmouth College.

For four years, before the White's 2009/10 furlough, the Schneider family rented this lovely river-view home. The Schneiders are moving back in as soon as the Whites depart, so: Welcome back, Schneider family!

River Improves

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times (2/18/2010, section B page 1), eleven miles of the Swannanoa River, from Bull Creek to the French Broad River, have improved in quality and will no longer be considered “impaired.” This includes the mile or so of the Swannanoa River that wraps around Botany Woods. The waters were previously considered impaired primarily because of turbidity issues. One reason the waters are running clearer might be that development has decreased.
